Our History

Established in May 2002, Buy Sod began when its three founders — longtime friends and sod producers Charles Harris of Sandhill Turf (Candor, NC), Clark Wooten of Tri-State Turf (Newton Grove, NC) and David McCart of Piedmont Turf (Maiden, NC) — realized that, by working together, they could form a partnership to offer an expanded product array to turfgrass managers across the entire state of North Carolina. They also realized that coordinating the product lineups at their three farms would enable them to provide sod to big-box retailers across an even larger geographic area. The three founders committed to growing only the turf varieties best suited for the region, focusing their efforts around proven, high-quality turfgrasses with the most desirable and eco-friendly characteristics.

The following year, Buy Sod began distributing sod to Lowe’s Home Improvement and John Deere Landscapes stores. Soon afterward, Home Depot joined the Buy Sod customer list. In 2006, the company undertook a major expansion and added four new production farms under the Buy Sod umbrella to cover all markets in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. With the acquisition of additional farms in Georgia and Tennessee, Buy Sod now operates ten production sod farms across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, covering thousands of acres and servicing several dozen retail outlets.

In addition, Buy Sod Inc. has a network of more than 25 “partner farms” that include the top sod producers across the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and northeast United States. Through this network, Buy Sod distributes the highest-quality sod to hundreds of big-box retailers throughout the United States.
